The airstrikes being carried out by a US-led coalition against Takfiri ISIL militants in Syria have been “futile,” says a commentator, Press TV reports.

“The air raids against ISIL (in Syria) have not been able to do anything, have not been able to materialize any result,” Ibrahim Mousawi, a political commentator, said in an interview with Press TV from Beirut.

He added that the Syrian army has been able to liberate more than 40 percent of those areas that have been captured by the ISIL.

The commentator also said that the US is “not serious” in its fight against ISIL, otherwise there would have been “completely different results.”

The remarks come as the Syrian army has repelled an attack by the Takfiri ISIL terrorists on an airbase in the eastern province of Deir al-Zor. A Syrian military source said on Saturday that the ISIL militants were forced to retreat from the airbase and the hills overlooking the facility following heavy shelling and bombardment by the Syrian military.

Mousawi further noted that the ISIL was not able to penetrate into the Deir al-Zor airbase from the very first place, adding that the Syrian army has been able to successfully repel them and crush all the terrorists.

“Here, an upper hand has been solidified by the Syrian army and the ISIL has been defeated in a better way,” he said.

Syria has been grappling with a deadly crisis since March 2011. The ISIL terrorists, who control large parts of Syria and Iraq, have threatened all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds, and Christians in the two countries.
