Israel’s recent airstrikes targeting areas near the Syrian capital of Damascus were carried out to assist the militants operating inside Syria, a commentator tells Press TV.

“Israel’s bombing attacks on Syria under [the] cover of darkness are ‘designed’ to help the terrorists inside Syria,” Daniel Patrick Welch, a political commentator, said in an interview with Press TV from Boston on Tuesday.

Israel carried out two airstrikes against an area of the Damascus International Airport and another airport in the town of Dimas on Sunday.

The Damascus International Airport is located southeast of the Syrian capital near areas such as Eastern Ghouta, where the ISIL militants have gained control over parts of Syrian territory.

The Syrian army has also said that the recent airstrikes carried out by the Tel Aviv regime near the Syrian capital were aimed at helping the ISIL militants operating in the Arab country.

Welch described the ISIL terrorist group as a “horrible menace that Israel and the US have both helped to fund and support and train and now they pretend to be against ISIL.”

Referring to the recent Israeli aggression against Syria, Welch said, “You are not at war by international definition when you are bombing other countries, you are ‘pursuing’ war or ‘waging’ war, which is very different; you are not under attack.”

Since the foreign-backed militancy started in Syria in March 2011, Damascus has on several occasions accused Israel of fueling terrorism in the country.
