NATO Special Representative denies words Azerbaijani news agencies ascribed to him
NATO Secretary General's Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, James Appathurai stated that the information published on the website of the Azerbaijani news agency "APA" does not correspond to the words he said and should be corrected. Appathurai’s statement is posted on his Facebook page.
Note that the article of the Azerbaijani news agency APA with the heading "James Appathurai: "We are the supporters of the resolution of the conflict within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and in accordance with the interests of the parties" has been removed from the site.
Refuting the words attributed to him by the Azerbaijani news agency Appathurai noted that the disposition of the Alliance upon the settlement of the protracted conflicts has been agreed during the Wales summit of Heads of States and Governments, and is formed in paragraphs 30, 31 of the declaration of the summit.
In the original text of the declaration, published on the official website of NATO is noted: “We will continue to support efforts towards a peaceful settlement of the conflicts in the south Caucasus, as well as in the Republic of Moldova, based upon these principles and the norms of international law, the UN Charter, and the Helsinki Final Act. The persistence of these protracted conflicts continues to be a matter of particular concern, undermining the opportunities for citizens in the region to reach their full potential as members of the Euro-Atlantic community. We urge all parties to engage constructively and with reinforced political will in peaceful conflict resolution, within the established negotiation frameworks," the statement reads.
