Syria must be backed against militants – Marandi
Syria should be fully supported in its fight against foreign-backed militants in order for stability to be brought back to the country, says an Iranian academic.
“Now that the militants have been suffering major defeats in Syria, the Iranians feel that this is the time to finish the job although it is going to be a long process, but the Iranians feel both vindicated and they feel that now it is time to help Syria to finish the job so that stability can be returned to this county,” Mohammad Marandi, professor at the University of Tehran, said in an interview with Press TV.
He also stated that “the Iranians feel they have made both the correct morale and strategic choice by supporting the Syrian government,” adding that it was quite clear to the Iranians that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United States and Turkey were supporting the “extremist organizations.”
Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani has said that Tehran will continue to fully support the Syrian government in its battle against terrorism and efforts aimed at helping the success of national dialog in the Arab country.
Marandi further noted that those “outside forces” who were opposing the Syrian government wanted to “seek revenge” on Syria for its support for Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and its alliance with Iran.
The academic concluded that security must be returned to Syria so that it could “prevent the Zionist regime from expanding its sphere of influence in the region.”
