Meeting of Syrian government, opposition planned in Moscow in January
The informal meeting is scheduled for late January, with possible participation of UN and Arab League Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed Thursday, according to Sputnik News.
The ministry’s official spokesman Alexander Lukashevich told reporters that Moscow has been engaged in active diplomatic efforts to launch a broad Syrian reconciliation dialogue.
Moscow’s planned meeting of Syrian government and opposition envoys in January is intended to pave the way for a broader dialogue and is in line with the Geneva reconciliation process, he said.
“Russia’s initiative to hold a meeting in Moscow absolutely does not replace the internationally recognized basis for the Syrian reconciliation,” he said.
