‘Al Khalifa will fail to mislead world’
A prominent Bahraini activist says the nation’s ongoing protests will reveal the Al Khalifa regime’s unpopularity to the world, saying the rulers in the kingdom will fail to mislead public opinion, Press TV reports.
Nabeel Rajab, a human rights activist from Manama, said in an interview with Press TV that the Bahraini regime has tried to “mislead the international opinion,” but people’s street protests will eventually expose “the reality and the truth” to the world.
“We will show to the world that this government does not have a popular legitimacy from the people. People are opposing the government’s policy. The government does not respect the human rights,” he stated.
The activist also said that Bahrain was not able to stop the revolution which started in 2011, adding that “people are still in the streets fighting for democracy, justice and human rights” despite the heavy crackdown by the Al Khalifa regime.
The comments come after Bahraini security forces attacked anti-regime protesters, who had taken to the streets in several villages on Thursday to condemn Manama’s crackdown on demonstrations as well as the arrests of political activists.
Rajab went on to say that the Bahraini people have been “marginalized and discriminated” by the ruling family, but they “will continue to fight for their rights, for equality and justice in this part of the world.”
Bahrain has launched a heavy-handed crackdown on anti-regime protesters since the uprising against the ruling Al-Khalifa regime began across the Persian Gulf kingdom in February 2011.
Troops from Saudi Arabia have been deployed to Bahrain to assist Manama in its crackdown on the peaceful protesters. According to local sources, scores of people have been killed and hundreds of others arrested.
