Azadlig: anti-American campaign splits Azerbaijani power into two camps
Internal forces in Azerbaijan are ambivalent about the anti-American campaign by the government. It is mainly Azerbaijani oligarchs that are against such campaigns, as in the case of the deepening the opposition between the US and Azerbaijan, the imposition of sanctions by the United States is quite acceptable, and this will primarily hit the pockets of the oligarchs, reports the Azerbaijani newspaper "Azadlig", citing its own sources.
As noted in the article, according to the newspaper sources, it is due to this fear that MPs close to oligarchs, NGOs and media sources of Azerbaijan do not openly joined the anti-American campaign unleashed by the authorities.
The newspaper reminds that the frequent calls on respect for human rights by the US addressed to Azerbaijan have led to a split between the two countries. Tension between the two countries has intensified after the publication of an article entitled "The Two Faces of Ilham Aliyev" in the famous American newspaper “The New York Times”. The last interview of the former Assistant Secretary of State David Kramer given to radio "Liberty" had its impact on the situation too.
Trying to counteract the US somehow, an article entitled "The duplicity of Barack Obama" was published in the official newspaper "Azerbaijan". Harsh accusations are sounded in the article against the president of the United States. Moreover, on 15 January this year the heads of the Azerbaijani pro-governmental NGOs held a hearing in Baku dedicated to the human rights situation in the United States.
