Thousands expected to attend Washington DC pro-police march
Thousands of people will participate in a Washington D.C. rally to express support of US law enforcement on Saturday, one of the organizers, Kelly Wince, has told Sputnik.
"We cannot provide exact numbers, but the estimates are thousands. This is coming from outside sources that have helped promote the events," Wince said Friday.
The pro-police march, also known as "End the Madness" or "Sea of Blue," is being coordinated by three police wives and will begin at noon local time (17:00 GMT) on January 17 at the National Law Enforcement Memorial. From there, the rally is expected to proceed to the Capitol building, according to the event's Facebook page.
"There are other people that will be organizing their own rallies in different cities across the US," Wince told Sputnik.
In December, a similar event in Cleveland, Ohio, attracted some 2,500 people, according to media reports.
Another peaceful rally to support US police officers and their families will be held at 1 p.m. local time (18:00 GMT) on Saturday in Lowell, Massachusetts, according to the march's Facebook page.
The rallies in support of US law enforcement agencies come in the wake of the December attacks on police officers.
Two New York Police officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu were killed by a gunman, who wanted to avenge the deaths of African-Americans Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
On Thursday, US Attorney General Eric Holder urged the US government to improve ways it collects data on the number of police fatalities as well as cases when civilians die at the hands of police.
