Merkel: Frequent violations of ceasefire is negative factor in Karabakh conflict settlement process
Germany stands for the peaceful settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict and seeks to make a personal contribution to this process, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, as reported by the news agency "Interfax".
As noted in the article, according to the Chancellor, Germany aims to become a mediator in the conflict. "We believe that the Council of Europe, the European Union can take the initiative in this direction, make a contribution to resolving the conflict. In this regard, Azerbaijan will hold talks with the European Commission," she said at a joint press conference with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on Wednesday in Berlin.
As stated in the article, Angela Merkel stressed that Germany is a member of the OSCE Minsk Group and supports the negotiations between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, carried out with the mediation of the co-chairing country – France, Russia and the United States. "We believe that in connection with the conflict there is only one solution – through peace. Frequent violation of ceasefire, of course, is a negative fact. I believe that Russia plays a big role here. I just wanted to mention this," Merkel noted.
On the eve of Ilham Aliyev's visit to Germany famous international human rights organization “Human Rights Watch” turned to Angela Merkel, urging her to make it clear to Azerbaijan that Germany would not send a high-level government delegation to the European games if activists who are in prison, are not released. Moreover, during a meeting of Chancellor Merkel with President Ilham Aliyev a group of human rights activists and journalists held a protest in front of the office of Germany. Participants of the rally demanded the release of imprisoned journalists and bloggers in Azerbaijan.
Famous Azerbaijani blogger and political emigrant Habib Muntezir also staged a protest in Berlin, during a joint press conference of Merkel with Aliyev.
