House of Commons of Great Britain condemns Azerbaijani authorities for human rights violations
The House of Commons of Great Britain signed resolution (Early day motion 718) condemning the Azerbaijani authorities for human rights violations, which is the peak of the recent wave of politically motivated arrests of independent journalists and human rights defenders. The resolution is published on the official website of the British Parliament.
The House of Commons is "shocked by the reports on negative attitude towards the political prisoners and tortures, in particular towards Leyla Yunus. These arrests took place against the background of large-scale repressions; the authorities are working to eliminate criticism and dissent systematically," the resolution text reads. It also expresses concern about the closure of the office of "Radio Liberty" in Baku.
With this resolution the House of Commons urges the Azerbaijani authorities calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Khadija Ismayilova, Leyla Yunus, Intigam Aliyev, Rasul Jafarov, Anar Mammadli and other political prisoners in the country, it also calls on the British government to come up with new statements regarding these and similar issues.
Resolution has been signed by representatives of the Conservatives, Labourist, Social Democrats and the Liberal Democrats.
