Khadija Ismayilova from jail: Cell was searched, everything taken away, family member visits not allowed
The famous Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova, being under arrest in the Kurdakhani jail, sent her next appeal from prison to be published on the website of “Radio Azadlig,” Azerbaijani information agency “Turan” reports.
As it is stated in the article in her letter she sends greetings to her dear ones and thanks them for their support. “We mustn’t leave the country to liars and sycophants so that our conscience not torture us later,” she writes emphasizing the great role of the newspaper “Azadlig” in the struggle against the authorities of the country.
According to Ismayilova, she was put in jail after her previous letter, but she wasn’t afraid. She goes on writing. “They searched the cell and took away everything I had written, including other letters. The newspapers are being delivered with a few days delay, and not the all. My family members are not allowed to visit me. That’s why I don’t have much information, but I read many books,” the journalist stresses.
Besides, on February 2 turned the half year since the arrest of the Azerbaijani human rights defender Rasul Jafarov, “Turan” notes. During a distance interview with the agency he emphasized that he believed in his innocence. “I handed a part of my financial documents to the public prosecutor's office, and the others I handed to the court. Three out of the five “victims” stated in court that they didn’t consider themselves as such. The absence of any injury to the other two victims will be proved in court,” Jafarov said adding that everybody in Azerbaijan knows that he was engaged solely in human rights activities rather than financing disorders, political parties and other unlawful purposes.
“While implementing my human rights activities I have never criticized the court decisions initially, but after the analyses of the verdicts brought in. I suppose, the case will proceed for two or three months. Let’s wait for the results,” he concluded.
The agency reminds that Jafarov was arrested on 2 August, 2014 on charges of illegal entrepreneurship, tax evasion, abuse of power. Later on, he was also accused of appropriation and official forgery. He denies all the charges and finds them conditioned by his human rights activities. The human rights organization “Amnesty International” announced him “a prisoner of conscience.”
