35 African migrants feared dead as boat sinks off Yemen coast
As many as 35 migrants fleeing Africa were unaccounted for after their boat sank off the Yemeni coast on Monday, Yemeni state Saba news agency reported, according to Xinhuanet.
The small vessel carrying 49 people capsized off the Red Sea coast of Yemen's southwest province of Taiz due to bad weather, said Saba, citing General Saleh al-Sabbari.
The Yemeni authorities have rescued 13 people, included eight Ethiopians and five Somalis and retrieved a body of another Somali.
The rescue operation is underway to look for survivors, said the official.
It was the third accident in the Yemeni waters in nearly two months.
On Dec. 29, the Yemeni authorities found the bodies of 24 Ethiopian migrants who died after their boat capsized off Taiz's coast. On Dec. 7, another 70 Ethiopians drowned after their boat sank off the Yemeni waters in the Red Sea due to bad weather.
According to local media reports, hundreds of Africans drown every year while trying to reach Yemen in crowded boats.
Over 62,000 asylum seekers, refugees and migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa in 2013, according to the UN refugee agency.
