Economist on CBA’s decision to raise refinancing rate
The Central Bank of Armenia (CBA) raised its refinancing rate primarily with the aim of curbing the inflation, economist Vilen Khachatryan told Panorama.am.
The CBA raised its key refinancing rate on Tuesday to 10.5 percent from 9.5 percent. Annual inflation was at 4.3 percent in January, the Central Bank said. Monthly inflation in January was at 2.5 percent.
In the economist’s words, this decision means a transition to the policy of “expensive money.” He noted that the Central Bank has adopted the regime of preventive measures.
The expert also said that curbing the inflation by means of monetary instruments is possible only in case of a sharp reduction of economic growth.
