Turkey arrests 3 over student's murder as outcry grows
A court in Turkey has remanded in custody three men accused over the brutal murder and attempted rate of a 20-year-old female student that sent a shockwave around the country, Anatolia news agency said Monday, according to AFP.
Ahmet Suphi Altindoken, his father Necmettin Altindoken and Fatih Gokce were placed under arrest pending trial by a court in the southern city of Tarsus in the Mersin region late Sunday, the official Anatolia news agency reported.
Ahmet Suphi Altindoken is suspected of carrying out the murder of Ozgecan Aslan, 20, while the other two are accused of being accomplices, it added.
Aslan, who went missing Wednesday evening in Tarsus, reportedly resisted sexual assault and was subsequently murdered. Her body was then burned to destroy the evidence.
The murder has sparked fury across Turkey, which has been battling over the years to reduce its appalling record for violence against women, with protests taking place in major cities.
