Arrest of conflictologist Arif Yunus who is accused of state treason is prolonged for 5 months in Azerbaijan
Baku Nasimi court extended the term of arrest of Azerbaijani conflictologist Arif Yunus, the husband of the director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD), the well-known human rights activist Leyla Yunus, for another 5 months - until August 5, 2015. As noted in the article, the lawyer believes the court's decision is unreasonable. The defense is intended to file an appeal. He also noted that Arif Yunus refuses to give evidence.
The agency reminds that Arif Yunus was arrested on August 5, 2014, a week after the arrest of his wife, director - human rights activist Leyla Yunus. The couple is accused of espionage in favor of Armenia. However, they reject the allegations and insist that they are far-fetched and politically motivated. International human rights organization “Amnesty International” recognized them as "prisoners of conscience".
The Nasimi District Court has also recently extended the arrest of Azerbaijani human rights activist Leyla Yunus for five months, despite the fact that earlier the German physician Kristan Witt had confirmed a serious illness that she had. According Kristan Witt, a blood test showed that the Azerbaijani human rights activist really was in process of decomposition of a liver. She continues to lose weight: within 6 months she has lost weight from 62 kg to 46 kg, all in all she has lost 16 kg.
