Winter Storm Quantum: Many flights canceled in U.S.
Winter Storm Quantum glazed over roadways in the South and the Rockies Monday, leaving one dead and spawning a major pileup among many other accidents in Texas, weather.com reported.
At least 29 vehicles collided on I-40 near the New Mexico/Texas state line and shut down eastbound travel on the highway, the Amarillo Globe-News reported. The highway has since reopened.
Quantum caused major headaches for air travelers, too. For Monday, more than 1,645 flights had been canceled and another 3,978 delayed as of Monday night, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. Most of these travel woes were in Texas and parts of the mid-South. The bulk of the cancellations were from the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, where 1,100 flights were canceled.
For Tuesday, about 425 flights had been preemptively canceled as of Monday night. Most of those came in Atlanta and Dallas. In Atlanta, the world's busiest airport, more than 105 departures and 125 arrivals have already been grounded for Tuesday, USA Today reported.
