Chicago black site exemplifies community-police tensions - US Congressman
Allegations of a Chicago police secret interrogation facility exemplifies decades-long problems in the city with community members’ civil rights and police abuses, US Congressman Danny Davis told Sputnik.
“There have been difficulties relative to police-community relations in Chicago ever since I’ve lived in Chicago… since 1961,” Davis said on Thursday.
Davis has represented for the past 17 years the district where the alleged police “black site” is located.
A major concern is “the civil rights of individuals who may have been the victims” of police abuse at the alleged site, the congressman noted.
“I really thought that we were making a great deal of progress, and I hope that we are,” Davis added.
Media reports alleged that the Chicago Police Department was using an unofficial site in an abandoned warehouse at Chicago’s Homan Square to interrogate criminal suspects. Detainees were beaten, shackled, and held for prolonged periods of time while being denied access to an attorney, according to the reports.
Davis told Sputnik that he fully supports an investigation at both the local and federal level into the possible abuses by police at the facility.
