Iran, IAEA fail to close outstanding nuclear issues at Tehran talk — statement
Experts of Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have failed to close two issues of possible military component in the Islamic Republic’s nuclear research at Tehran talks on March 9, the Russian news agency TASS reports.
IAEA said in a statement released on Tuesday that the sides agreed to hold another meeting in mid-April.
The agency also said that at the April meeting the sides would continue information exchange on two remaining issues. IAEA emphasised the importance of accelerating the process within the framework of the cooperation agreement.
IAEA head Yukiya Amano said in early March that the Iranian side had thus far failed to provide full information on two outstanding issues related to the possible military component in Tehran’s nuclear research. According to him, these issues are nuclear explosion simulation and experiments with highly explosive substances.
IAEA and Tehran agreed in November 2013 to consider stage by stage disputable issues raised by international experts. Iran has implemented two "packages of practical measures." However, according to the agency, two of the five steps that had been coordinated last May have not yet been implemented. IAEA also hopes that Tehran will raise a number of outstanding issues to be included in the next package.
