SIPRI: Arms imports by Azerbaijan increased by 249%
Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has published its new report about the state of the international arms and military techniques market. According to the report, Azerbaijan — which has a territorial dispute with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region that saw rising tensions in 2014 — increased its arms imports by 249% between 2005–2009 and 2010–2014, Azerbaijani information outlet Oxu.az reports citing the website of the Institute.
According to the article, it is stated in the report that the UK was the largest importer of major weapons in Europe (receiving 14% of deliveries), followed by Azerbaijan (13%). Besides, according to the data provided in the report, Russia accounted for 85% of Azerbaijan’s arms imports.
Meanwhile, Armenia’s imports were 4% of those of Azerbaijan, the report reads.
