Scandal gathers pace: Malta Prime Minister is suspected of corrupt ties to Azerbaijani authorities
Josef Muscat, Prime Minister of Malta, is under constant accusations because of the information that leaked into the press revealing his criminal ties with Azerbaijani authorities, Azerbaijani newspaper Azadlig writes citing Malta Independent.
According to the article, the leader of Maltese opposition, Simon Busuttil, said that despite the lack of certain undeniable facts about the corrupt cooperation between the Prime Minister and Azerbaijani government, there were quite grounded suspicions for that.
“After the Auditor General's report, the Prime Minister visited a country without media or public officials present. The people who went with the Prime Minister were politicians; this raises suspicions and it is in situations like this that corruption occurs," he added.
According to an earlier article of Malta Independent, because of the lack of documentation, the Auditor General in Malta questioned the agreements on hedging fuel with State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) signed at “ministerial direction.” Opposition leader Simon Busuttil on his microblog Twitter accused Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi of “giving millions worth of contracts to Azerbaijan's SOCAR by ‘ministerial direction,’ and that stank.”
