Haykakan Zhamanak: Small hydropower plants are in difficult situation
The Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA) has not paid for the electricity it bought from small hydropower plants from January 1, 2015, Haykakan Zhamanak reports. This is an unprecedented situation as ENA normally made the payments until the 20th day of the next month.
“The small hydropower plants are now in a difficult situation. Many of them have loan duties they pay off monthly. Some of them have loan duties to foreign banks.
“ENA spokesperson Natalia Sarjanyan confirmed the report about the non-payment of the debts to small hydropower plants, saying that the company has financial problems. She said that a working group was set up to discuss possible ways to come out of this situation. ENA’s total debt to small hydropower plants amounts to several million dollars.
“According to our information, however, these debts are due to not only financial difficulties, but also the sale process of the company. ENA is trying to reduce its payments to a minimum until its owner changes,” the newspaper says.
