Turkish opposition party nominates ethnic Armenian as candidate in parliamentary elections
Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) is breaking new ground by nominating an ethnic Armenian as a candidate for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Selina Doğan Özuzun is a graduate of Galatasaray University Law School with a master’s degree from Bilgi University. She speaks Armenian, French and English, the Hurriyet Daily News reports.
Özuzun’s candidacy became possible after a meeting between CHP head Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu and the representatives of minority groups last week. Kılıçdaroğlu welcomed a request by the minority groups to have a representative in parliament from the ranks of the CHP and proposed that they introduce a common nominee. Özuzun, who has long served as a lawyer representing minority foundations, was introduced to the CHP after other in-house consultations with minority groups.
