Ambassador of Iran assesses Armenia as secure and economically beneficial variant to transport Iranian gas to Europe
Of its neighbors, the best relations that Iran has maintained over the last 24 years were those with Armenia, IRI ambassador to Armenia, Mohammad Reisi said.
Speaking about the perspectives of the Armenian-Iranian economic relations in his interview to the programme R-Evolutia on Armenia TV, he said, “The relations between Armenia and Iran have not seen changes since Armenia gained independence. We are on very good terms. Despite the strict sanctions imposed on Iran, the relations with Armenia saw no change. We must make sure that the problems that existed in the economic relations will be resolved with the withdrawal of the sanctions, and we will be able to implement all the agreements we achieved with Armenia; particularly with Armenia with whom we maintain special relations.”
As for the possibility of transporting Iranian gas through the territory of Armenia, the Iranian Ambassador said, “Iran has got the biggest gas supplies in the word. Naturally, Iran must look for new markets to export its gas. Iranian gas supply to Europe has not been considered yet, but if there are such discussions, Armenia can also be considered as a short, secure and economically beneficial variant.”
In response to the question whether the agreement signed between Armenia and Russia in the field of gas can become an obstacle for the Armenian-Iranian energy projects, Ambassador Reisi said, “A contract with 20 years’ term has been signed between Iran and Armenia. Taking into consideration the agreement signed between Armenia and Russia, the contract signed by Armenia and Iran undergoes no changes, it is still in force.”
