Magnitude 5.2 earthquake rocks eastern Indonesia
A 5.2-magnitude earthquake has occurred off the northeastern coast of Indonesia's Wetar Island, belonging to the Maluku Province, the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) informed RIA Novosti on Wednesday, according to Sputnik.
The epicenter of the quake was located 266 kilometers (165 miles) away from the coast, at a depth of 172 kilometers (107 miles), according to BMKG.
No tsunami warning was issued and no immediate information on casualties or damages was available.
According to the Richter scale, earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0-5.9 are considered to be moderate and can lead to casualties and cause damage to buildings and infrastructure.
Indonesia, which comprises thousands of islands, is vulnerable to earthquakes due to its geographical location.
In 2004, a 9.2-magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia off the coast of Sumatra Island, triggering powerful tsunami waves that killed at least 220,000 people.
