Zaman: German President ‘preferred Armenians,’ and so did Chancellor Merkel
German President Joachim Gauck and Chancellor Angela Merkel will not participate in the events commemorating the centenary of the Battle of Gallipoli in Turkey on April 24.
According to Turkey’s pro-opposition news outlet Zaman, the German President “preferred the Armenians,” and is going to attend the holy mass in memory of the Armenian Genocide victims in Berlin. Moreover, he is going to make a speech on the sidelines of that event.
The Turkish news outlet asks whether the German President will call the events of the beginning of the 20th century a genocide, and underlines that Joachim Gauck is the first German President to attend Armenian Genocide event.
It is also noted that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will not travel to Turkey pleading being busy.
Zaman adds that on April 24, 2015 the Bundestag will hold a special session dedicated to the issue of Armenian Genocide.
