Azadlig: Azerbaijani authorities resemble host who kicks out disabled children before guests arrive
The warmth, respect and care that the citizens of Azerbaijan did not get from the authorities for long years, now go to the foreigners for the authorities of the country strive to look generous, democratic and modern in the eyes of the guests from abroad, Azerbaijani newspaper Azadlig writes.
According to the article, bans have already started to be imposed ahead of the European Games. It turns out that the guests from Europe are not supposed to see old cars, beggars, street vendors and half-destroyed slums in Baku.
“You see, it looks like, when, say, guests enter into the house and the host kicks out his disabled children into the street to hide them from the guests. And here you have our state trying to conceal the real situation in the country from the tourists. First of all, the authorities humiliate the citizens, and second, they willy-nilly confess to have built a shameful country,” the article reads.
According to the article, the Azerbaijani authorities appropriate 95 per cent of the oil revenues and spend the remaining 5 per cent on creating the necessary image ahead of the European Games. Still, by imposing bans on taxi drivers, pressing on the street vendors and expelling beggars the authorities will not be able to hide the problems of the country for the Europeans are well aware of them.
“If the authorities imposed such bans in the field of robbery, corruption and monopoly in their time, Azerbaijan would be a completely different state. Indeed, the European Games are in themselves a transparent mirror which reflects the true face of the authorities,” the newspaper concludes.
