World Economic Forum: Azerbaijan's tourism competitiveness rating worsened
World Economic Forum published a new report on global competitiveness in the sphere of tourism and travel, where Azerbaijan received the 84th place worsening its position by six points compared with 2013. The rating is published on the website of World Economic Forum.
Published biennially, The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) benchmarks tourism and travel competitiveness of 141 countries from all regions of the world. It comprises 14 pillars, related with the reception of tourists. It includes historical and cultural heritage, economic development, transportation, mobile communication, medicine, international openness.
In terms of international openness, Azerbaijan is located on the 107th place. Environmental Sustainability put Azerbaijan on 95th place, Air Transport Infrastructure – 84th, Ground and Port Infrastructure – 65th, Cultural Resources and Business Travel – 75th, Tourist Service Infrastructure – 93rd, Natural Resources – 130th.
The first places in the ranking of WEF were taken by countries hosting the largest number of tourists. The top ten countries in 2015 are Spain, France, Germany, the USA, the UK, Switzerland, Australia, Italy, Japan and Canada. The rating also includes Russia (126), Georgia (71), Kazakhstan (85), and Armenia (89).
''The diversity in the top 30 shows that a country does not have to be wealthy to have a flourishing tourism sector,” said Roberto Crotti, Economist at the World Economic Forum. “But many countries should still do more to tackle travel and tourism challenges, including visa policies, better promotion of cultural heritage, environmental protection and ICT readiness. This in turn would drive economic growth and the creation of jobs,” Economist of the WEF Roberto Crotti commented.
