Millions of dollars spent on Flower Holiday in Baku turned into garbage dump
On Sunday, Baku celebrated the annual unofficial Holiday of Flowers, which is held since 2000 in the Azerbaijani capital and other cities and districts in the memory of the late president of the country, Heydar Aliyev. The holiday begins on May 10, Heydar Aliyev’s birthday, and goes on for a few days.
On May 11, a video of Meydan.tv appeared in YouTube showing how the central streets of Baku had turned into garbage dump of flowers. People pulled out the flowers from the wreaths, stepped on them and pulled around the flower compositions.
The chief executive of Baku, Hajibali Abutalibov, said that more that 2 million flowers from 80 countries had been brought for the Flower Holiday.
The flower holiday has been annually celebrated in Azerbaijan on May 10 since 2000. It is dedicated to Heydar Aliyev’s birthday. Huge sums of money are spent on the holiday. In particular, Baku City Hall published the figure 15 million dollars in 2007, and in 2013, on Heydar Aliyev’s 90th anniversary, this sum exceeded 76 million dollars.
