Two Chileans killed while spray painting building during student protest
Two students were shot dead while trying to paint the walls of the building and attach the posters to them after a protest march in the Chilean city of Valparaiso, local authorities said Thursday, Sputnik reports.
Earlier in the day, students held protests across Chile demanding education reform.
According to La Segunda portal, the victims of the deadly shooting were aged 18 and 25. The suspect is a 20-year-old man who was apparently angry that they had vandalized his home and opened fire at them.
Shortly after the tragedy, he was detained and is due to be interrogated later in the day, the news portal said.
Immediately after the murder of the two young people, the Chilean government held an emergency meeting.
Interior Minister Jorge Burgos stated that such cruelty cannot be justified, according to La Segunda.
"According to preliminary data of the investigation, the alleged killer had no ties with the police forces present in the city [during the demonstration]" Burgos was quoted as saying by the media outlet.
