Karabakh war veteran dies after demonstrative self-immolation in Azerbaijan
Karabakh war veteran Mirtahir Mursalov, who yesterday committed self-immolation in front of Jalilabad district Police, died in hospital. He was taken to hospital N5, Baku but the doctors were not able to save his life, his brother Mirshamil Mursalov told agency Turan.
In answer to a question regarding the reasons of the suicide, Mirtahir’s brother said a group of the residents of the district had attacked him. Still, Mirtahir’s multiple complaints to the police regarding the incident did not give any result. Such bureaucratic indifference was what led Karabakh war participant to suicide.
Turan also got reports from Karabakh Veterans’ Union that Mirtahir Mursalov had been harassed by a group of the drug dealers in the district. Despite the continuous appeals to the police after the beating, the authorities did not respond. To protest against the indifference, Mursalov committed self-immolation.
The chairman of Jalilabad district branch of the party Musavat, Idayat Ismayil, called Mirtahir yet another victim of bureaucratic indifference and an indicator of the corruption and bribery level in the district.
This is already the second similar case in Jalilabad district. A few days ago, Karabakh war veteran Hasan Abidinov hanged himself in the boiler room of a residential building in Jalilabad. Abidinov was married and had two children.
The discussion of the problems of Karabakh war veterans and those disabled as a result of the war actualized in Azerbaijan after December 25, 2013, when Karabakh war 2nd group disabled Zaur Hasanov committed a self-immolation in Baku as an act of protest against the violation of his civil rights by Settar Mehbaliev, the chairman of Azerbaijan confederation of trade unions. The disabled, father of three, argued that the official seized his territory, where he ran a small café. Karabakh war veterans held protests against this incident in Baku on December 26 and 27.
