Deputy candidate for Turkey's main opposition injured in armed assault
Turkey's main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy candidate Elif Doğan Türkmen was wounded in an armed attack at around 9 a.m. on May 26 in a restaurant in the southern Turkish province of Adana, Doğan News Agency reported, according to Hurriyet Daily News.
Türkmen, who is running for parliament on the CHP ticket as the party’s first candidate from Adana, was injured in the knee after gunshots were fired while she was on her way to a breakfast event, Adana Gov. Mustafa Büyük said, according to state-run Anadolu Agency.
Türkmen was hospitalized with not life-threatening injuries, Büyük said. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
The vehicle used in the assault was found abandoned and was identified as a rental car, Büyük said, adding that the assailants were being sought.
As the general elections are less than two weeks away, the heat is escalating around Turkey but especially in Adana as lastly the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) candidate Ramazan Demir was stabbed in the stomach three times while election campaigning in the Aladağ district of Adana on May 23.
On May 18, bombs had exploded at two local headquarters of the Kurdish problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) in Adana and neighboring Mersin. Hidden in a cargo parcel and a gift-packaged flower pot, the two bombs injured four people and damaged the buildings.
