Armenian President meets with Secretary General of Socialist International
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan on Tuesday received Secretary General of the Socialist International (SI) Luis Ayala, who has arrived in Armenia to take part in the meeting of the SI Commission for the CIS, the Caucasus and the Black Sea hosted by the ARF. Among the items on the meeting agenda are issues related to democratic consolidation and resolution of conflicts in the region, the President’s press office reports.
The President welcomed the guest to our country and expressed the hope that the Yerevan meeting attended by Mr. Ayala had been successful. Serzh Sargsyan greatly appreciated the work done by the SI bringing together the world’s socialist and social-democratic political forces which has proclaimed freedom, justice and solidarity as its political values. The President stressed that those values have always been crucial to Armenians.
The SI Secretary General expressed satisfaction with the discussions held during the meeting. Briefly presenting the activities of the SI, a worldwide association of social-democratic, socialist and labor parties, which binds together 152 member parties and multiple organizations from all the continents, Luis Ayala underscored that cooperation with Armenia through the SI member ARF has been strengthening year after year. He noted that the organization has expressed its solidarity with the ARF’s position on amending the Armenian Constitution, placing importance on deepening domestic reforms and pushing forward the democratic agenda.
The interlocutors discussed the challenges posing threat to regional peace and stability, touched upon the NK peace process mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group, the present issues, the relationship between Armenia and Turkey and upon the international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.
The Armenian President expressed his thanks to the SI for taking constructive positions on issues of crucial importance to Armenia both on the international stage and in home countries of SI member parties.
