Didier Burkhalter evacuates human rights defender from Azerbaijan who hid in Swiss Embassy for almost year
The chairman of the Institute for Reporters’ Freedom and Safety (IRFS), Emin Huseynov, who was sheltered in the Swiss Embassy in Baku as the Azerbaijani authorities tried to arrest him on trumped-up charge of tax evasion, has left the Embassy, information agency Turan reports.
The Swiss newspaper Zurder Zeitung reported that Emin Huseynov flew out of Azerbaijan on Switzerland’s top diplomat Didier Burkhalter's plane, who attended the Euro Games ceremony in Baku on June 12.
Federal department of foreign affairs spokesman Jean-Marc Crevoisier said Emin Huseynov, 35, is currently in Bern. He was given a Swiss visa allowing him to stay in that country till September.
Haqqin.az reminds that Emin Huseynov and his wife – US army servicewoman – intended to get an asylum in the American Embassy in Baku last summer. However, the US diplomatic mission rejected them. After that, a number of diplomatic missions from European countries in Baku offered him an asylum. Huseynov chose the Swiss Embassy.
