Fish breeding is a perspective field for Armenia: RA Minister of Agriculture
“Fish breeding is one of the leading branches of the agri-food sector, and its development is important both for the food security of the country and for improving the external trade of agricultural products”, - said the RA Minister of Agriculture Sergo Karapetyan today at the workshop titled WTO, Market Access and Fisheries Trade Issues taking place in Yerevan 16-18 June.
The Press department of the Ministry of Agriculture reports that the president of Eurofish international organization Aina Afanasieva as well as representatives of about 20 European countries also took part in the workshop.
“Fish breeding is a perspective field for Armenia and has a great potential for developing, which can fully be exercised only through working with leading international organizations as well as through step-by-step implementation of the efficient technologies and practice that exists in the developed countries, through producing competitive products that meet international standards as well as by means of increasing fish export”, - said the minister in his speech.
He also noted that as a result of state policies in recent years, particularly due to state support to fish export, the scale of fish breeding and export has increased markedly.
During 2011-2014 fish production more than doubled. Fish export in 2014 reached 2,706 tons, while in 2011 it was only 1,600 tons.
President of Eurofish Aina Afanasieva has expressed hope that this regional workshop which brought together experts from 20 European countries will have importance for establishing strong cooperation, exchanging experience and raising awareness about the latest developments in the field.
