Rebecca Vincent: Rock band U2 stands up for political prisoners in Azerbaijan, unlike Lady Gaga
Paul David Hewson, the frontman of the world-famous Irish rock-band U2 and famous for his stage name Bono, stood up for political prisoners in Azerbaijan, Turan news agency reports citing online resource Meydan TV.
Speaking on stage from his June 14 concert in Montreal, Bono mentioned six jailed friends and said that they are locked behind bars for the crime of expressing their opinion. He named Emin Huseynov, Khadija Ismayilova, Anar Mammadli, Leyla Yunus, Rasul Jafarov, and Intigam Aliyev, whose huge photos were displayed in the arena. Bono’s strong appeal was a sharp contrast from Lady Gaga’s surprise performance at the opening ceremony of the European Games, according to the report.
Meydan TV cites the Sport for Rights project coordinator Rebecca Vincent as saying that they were thrilled that Bono spoke out on behalf of the civil activists jailed in Azerbaijan.
“The world knows what is really taking place in the country, and will not keep silent,” she said.
