Police do not find packages with stones in area of anti-tariff hike rally in Yerevan
Policemen did not find any packages with stones near participants of the rally held on Bagramian Avenue in downtown Yerevan to protest a hike in power tariffs.
Deputy Chief of Yerevan Police Valery Osipyan told reporters earlier today that information was received about packages with stones placed in the garbage bins that protesters used to block the street so policemen were instructed to check the information.
“It is a matter of our common security, first of all, security of protesters. I think discontent in this regard is inappropriate,” Osipyan said.
A protest against the electricity tariff hike is underway in Bagramian Avenue. Deputy Chief of the Armenian Police Hunan Poghoisyan suggested that participants continue their rally in Liberty Square, but they refused. The activists stressed that they will remain until their demand for cancelation of the decision on power price rise is met.
Wednesday night, June 24, was quiet in Yerevan. Former and current MPs, intellectuals, representatives of the clergy and show business, lawyers and reporters were together with protesters on Bagramian Avenue. They formed a live shield between police and demonstrators. This morning new policemen replaced their colleagues who maintained public order in the city at night.
