British European Games worker killed in road crash in Azerbaijan
A British national working at the inaugural European Games in Azerbaijan has been killed in a road accident in the capital Baku.
British embassy spokesperson Gunel Ahmedova told The Associated Press by telephone that the individual, who has not been named, had been employed by a company working on the ceremonies at the Games.
Two more British nationals were hospitalized and were receiving consular assistance, Ahmedova said Wednesday.
European Games chief operating officer Simon Clegg confirmed that organizers were "aware of a road traffic accident" which happened Tuesday, but would not comment further, saying "details of the incident are still being determined."
On June 11, three Austrian swimmers were struck by a bus in the athletes' village, leaving one, 15-year-old Vanessa Sahinovic, with severe spinal injuries.
