“This style will not bring success”. Armenian PM urges demonstrators to be constructive
At the government session today Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan urged supporters of ‘No to Robbery’ civic initiative staging a sit-in on Bagramian Avenue in central Yerevan to be constructive. The sit-in participants are protesting a rise in power tariffs in Armenia.
“This style will not bring success. I suggest being constructive. The government is ready to consider any raised issue. Blocking a downtown avenue in the capital city and impeding the free movement of citizens is a violation of the Constitution. I call on you to be constructive again and discuss all the issues together,” he said.
The government took a decision at its session today to include five public figures in Disciplinary Commission of the Armenian Police. In the light of recent events the Disciplinary Commission’s activities have become more urgent, Abrahamyan said.
H. Abrahamyan said the actions of police on the morning of June 23 triggered a certain reaction of society and some international partners of Armenia.
“The police announced that an official investigation is underway. Disciplinary Commission has serious work to do from this viewpoint too. And society expects efficient, impartial and transparent work,” the PM noted.
As reported, on Tuesday morning, June 23, the police used water cannons to disperse demonstrators who blocked the central Bagramian Avenue in Yerevan. Prior to that, the police told demonstrators to leave Bagramian Avenue and return to Liberty Square so that traffic could resume. Over 200 people, including reporters, were taken to police stations. 25 people sought emergency first aid, the press service of Health Ministry reported. Following the events on Bagramian Avenue the Office of Armenian Prosecutor General opened a criminal case under the article ‘hooliganism’.
