Tevan Poghosyan: Night passed peacefully on Bagramian Avenue in Yerevan
A protest against a rise in electricity tariffs continues on Bagramian Avenue in Yerevan. Armenian parliament deputy Tevan Poghosyan who was with demonstrators throughout the night said that night passed peacefully, with some 700 people remaining on the avenue.
“I am glad that the situation was calm. Youths continue their struggle. They ensured the participation of a large number of people,” the MP said adding: “Rest assured that they will not give up their struggle. And I hope the government will take activists’ demands seriously and meet those demands”.
There were several attempts to make provocations which did not have serious consequences, T. Poghosyan said. “There were several attempts that cannot considered as serious provocations. People tried to provoke. Perhaps nerves are on edge, or perhaps there are special provokers trying to discredit this peaceful action. Nevertheless the organizers, the police and we do our best to prevent such incidents from occurring again,” he said.
As was reported, a sit-in of supporters of ‘No to Robbery’ civic initiative is underway on Bagramian Avenue in downtown Yerevan to protest the power tariff rise. Participants say the protests they have staged since June 19 are purely social by nature. They demand that the head of state revoke the decision of the Public Services Regulatory Commission of June 17 to raise the electricity tariff by 6.93 drams.
