Chairman of Union of Armenians in Russia Ara Abrahamyan: I believe in wisdom and patriotism of our youth
External players should not interfere in the situation in Armenia, let alone take advantage of it, Chairman of the Union of Armenians of Russia, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Ara Abrahamyan told RIA Novosti on Friday.
According to him, rocking the boat will lead to no good, we should draw lessons from mistakes of others. “Other countries should not interfere in this situation or take advantage of it. I believe that the Armenian people and President have wisdom and he will not allow the situation to reach the point of getting out of control”, he said.
Ara Abrahamyan expressed hope the situation over protests in Armenia will not reach a critical phase and a bitter confrontation between protesters and the government.
‘The electricity price hike is a purely social issue. I hope the situation will not escalate. I believe in wisdom and patriotism of our youth. But authorities should not break the spirit of our youth. We need to find a common way out of the situation that will be to everyone’s advantage. If this understanding exists, all will be all well,” he added.
As was reported, a sit-in protest is underway in central Bagramian Avenue of Yerevan. The protest is staged by supporters of ‘No to Robbery’ civic initiative against the rise in electricity tariffs. Participants stress that the protests they have been staging since June 19 is purely social by nature. They demand that the head of state revoke the decision of Armenia’s Public Services Regulatory Commission of June 17 to raise electricity tariffs by 6.93 drams.
