Staff of Yerevan’s Nairit Plant to rally again if their back wages not paid by July 15
Workers of Yerevan-based Nairit chemical plant gathered outside the Armenian government today , on July 9 to get information regarding repayment of their back wages.
As was reported, on June 9 Armenian Prime Hovik Abrahamyan received a group of Nairit workers. He told them that during the consultation held by Armenian president, a decision was made to obtain funds by July 15. 2015 in order to pay Nairit workers’ back wages for the last few years. The PM said that Energy and Natural Resources Minister Yervand Zakharyan was instructed to set up a commission responsible for calculation of wages so the debt was expected to be paid by July 15.
The head of Nairit Plant’s trade union Hrach Tadevosyan met with energy minister two days ago and he reaffirmed the authorities’ promise to pay the debt in full by July 15, Panorama.am learned fron Anush Harutyunyan, a member of the coordinating group of Nairit workers .
She said the workers intend to wait until July 15 and then stage a protest again if the promise is not fulfilled.
Workers of Nairit have been holding protests since late 2014. They are demanding that their back wages (a total of 5.7 billion drams over the past 4 years) be repaid. In February 2015 the plant announced 1,700 layoffs.
