Armenian culture minister, UNESCO official discuss destruction of monuments in Syria
Armenia attaches great importance to the UNSCO activities aimed at preserving cultural values, Armenian Culture Minister Hasmik Hakobyan said at a meeting with Alfredo Perez de Arminan, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture. The minister thanked Mr. Arminan for accepting an invitation to participate in Yerevan-hosted 3rd international conference “Cultural Policy, Policy for Culture”, according to Armeniangenocide100.org.com.
“Our cooperation will intensify in the future, “H. Poghosyan said, stressing that in present-day world, culture’s role and significance deserves great respect.
“Monuments, including Armenian ones, are being destroyed in Syria. We are equally worried over the fate of all monuments. Rest assured that Armenia takes all necessary steps to ban and prevent – in case of armed conflicts - illegal smuggling of cultural values into and out of the country and an illegal transfer of property rights ,” the minister said.
She said Armenia does its utmost so that elements of Armenian traditional culture can be included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List and the Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
At the conclusion of the meeting Hasmik Poghosyan presented Alfredo Perez de Arminan with an Armenian duduk and a commemorative coin dedicated to Toros Roslin.
