Infant, maternal mortality rates on the decline in Armenia
A conference with the participation of 45 delegates from 7 countries started in Yerevan to discuss the assessment and planning of the strategy of national programs on mother and child health care.
Armenian Health Minister Armen Muradyan welcomed the event participants and wished them successful work.
Armenia has in recent years made considerable progress in mother and child health care, which was also indicated in reports of international organizations, Deputy Minister Sergei Khachatryan said, stressing in particular the decline in maternal and infant mortality rates in the country.
“Last year’s index was 9.8 deaths per 1,000 births as compared with 8.8 per 1,000 births this year, but I should note that the mortality rate exceeded 20 per thousand only 7-8 years ago. This decline is due to various programs, first of all screening programs,” the deputy minister said. According to him, the program that was launched several years ago and was aimed at providing free healthcare to children under age 7 has helped improve access to hospital services.
“Of course, these indexes should be improved further. We set very high standards close to European ones, and relevant programs are underway with this aim in view,” S. Khachatryan said.
