Negotiations over a new legal agreement between Armenia and the European Union may start in the near future, with their successful completion opening a new page in bilateral relations. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan expressed such a hope today during a joint press conference with President of the European Council Donald Tusk who is on a visit to Yerevan.
According to S. Sargsyan, such visits provide an opportunity to discuss the development prospects of Armenia-EU relations and share opinions on a range of issues.
The Armenian president said Armenia is interested in developing its relations with the EU, which will promote the long-standing bilateral dialog.
The head of state added that during the meeting they underlined the dynamic development of Armenia-EU relations that bear evidence of the existence of the mutual political will and, more importantly, a system of shared values that form the basis of the development path.
‘I am sure that establishing closer ties and the further deepening of democratic processes and reforms in Armenia will be of a consistent nature,” S. Sargsyan noted.
In his words, the Riga Eastern Partnership summit held in May was discussed and, he and D. Tusk noted with satisfaction the differentiated approach – adopted at the summit - of the EU to partner states as well as the obligation on mutually beneficial cooperation .
The visit of Donald Tusk testifies to a mutual understanding between Armenia and the EU and their mutual interest to deepen the links and the formats of communication, the president said.
