James Warlick: Past several months have been a period of relative quiet, and we want that period to continue
During the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs’ visits to the region, an issue was raised on the importance of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict sides’ continuing to respect ceasefire and avoid violence, the OSCE Minsk Group U.S. Co-Chair James Warlick was reported by Trend news agency as saying to reporters in Baku on July 23.
J. Warlick said that the possibility of a meeting between the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia later this year is being discussed.
The co-chair also said the past several months have been a period of relative quiet.
“We want that period to continue as a base for trust and furthering a negotiated settlement,” Warlick added.
The U.S. C0-chair said that the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan are committed to a peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict and that they do not want an escalation and war resumption, according to 1news.az.
He touched upon the lack of trust between the conflicting parties, noting that a whole generation grew up and representatives of both sides have no links with each other.
The U.S. diplomats stressed that OSCE Minsk Group works as pragmatically as possible so that the conflicting parties could reach a mutually acceptable lasting resolution to the conflict within the shortest possible time.
Commenting on the parallels drawn by Azerbaijani reporters between the Ukraine problem and the Karabakh conflict, J. Warlick said that each conflict has its history and peculiarities. He noted that in the Karabakh conflict too, they support territorial integrity, self-determination of peoples, and non-use of force, and their work is based on those three principles.
