64 prisoners stage mass jailbreak in southern Brazil
At least 64 prisoners staged a jailbreak at a prison in southern Brazil on Sunday night, according to Brazilian police on Monday.
The mass escape happened in the city of Londrina, in the southern state of Parana, where a group of prisoners managed to break a hole in their cell and escape, according to Xinhua.
Before fleeing, several prisoners ransacked a section of the prison and made off with weapons, ammunition and bulletproof jackets. During their escape, several also carjacked several passing motorists and stole their cars.
By morning, police had successfully captured at least 23 of the escapees. An investigation into the escape also revealed that the prison had a maximum capacity for 24 detainees but contained 115 prisoners at the time of the escape.
