Prime minister of Armenia: Money from Vorotan Hydro Cascade sale will be used to subsidize electricity tariffs
The money received from the sale of the Vorotan hydropower plants will be used to subsidize the power tariffs that increased today, on August 1, in Armenia, Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan told reporters during a briefing today.
Panorama.am reported earlier that Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia took a decision to raise electricity tariffs by 6.93 drams. The decision sparked demonstrations, during which protesters blocked Bagramyan Avenue in downtown Yerevan for days. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan subsequently announced that the government would subsidize the tariff hike and be consistent so an international audit of Electric Networks of Armenia Company would be conducted.
