Azerbaijan in top 10 countries on number of abortions
Azerbaijan is among the top 10 countries on the number of abortions, according to the website of the American Institute of Charlotte Lozier.
China leads the top-ten countries’ list and Azerbaijan closes it with 159.700 abortions a year. Remarkably, Turkey ranks 9th in the list with 177.100 abortions a year. The rating also includes such countries as the United States (1 213 000), Russia (1 208700), India (641.800), Vietnam (332.200), Japan (242.300), France (198.200), England and Wales (189.800).
According to a UN report, Azerbaijan has the highest rate of selective abortions. Azerbaijani experts say Azerbaijan occupies leading positions in Central Asia in the field of selective abortions. In particular, the Azerbaijani expert Matanat Azizov believes that the cause of increasing number of abortions in Azerbaijan are unemployment, low wages and corruption. The gynecologist Leyla Mammadova says that abortions are widespread among under-age girls in Azerbaijan.
