Deputy agriculture minister of Armenia gives reason for potato price increase
Potato prices went up by 3% in Armenia in July 2015 compared with June, according to data released last week by the National Statistical Service of Armenia.
Deputy Agriculture Minister of Armenia Samvel Galstyan told Panorama.am that potato supply declined on the market due to the hot weather.
In his words, because of extremely high temperatures this summer in Armenia, early potato varieties ripened ahead of time and potatoes were also taken out to the market rather early. So there has been a potato shortage to some extent under such conditions. A change in supply and demand has affected a growth in prices,” S. Galstyan said, expressing an opinion that potato prices will change in 10-15 days when potatoes of other varieties are harvested.
The deputy minister said that this year the areas sown with potatoes have increased in Armenia. “32.5 thousand hectares were sown with potatoes this year, while last year sown areas totaled 31.55 thousand hectares”.
As was reported, the deputy head of the weather service of Armenia’s Ministry of Territorial Administration and Emergency Situationa Gagik Surenyan said at a press conference last week that the heat wave in Armenia in the summer of 2015 was unprecedented by its duration since 1843 – the year when weather observations started in our country.
