Minister: China interested in implementation of Armenia-Iran railway construction project
The Chinese side has presented a number of proposals related to the implementation of Armenia-Iran railway construction project, Armenian Minister of Transport and Communications Gagik Beglaryan said after the government session today.
“We have presented our proposals. Details will be given later when a final agreement is reached. The Chinese side shows interest and I think they submitted very good proposals,” he said.
As regards Russia’s position on the construction of Armenia-Iran railway, the minister said the Russian side has so far made only one statement in that connection, and the matter concerns the position of a company head, rather than the position of Russia.
It should be mentioned that earlier a number of media outlets wrote about inefficiency of Armenia-Iran railway construction project implementation, while citing the head of Russian Railways Company Vladimir Yakunin. The company later responded to those reports, saying Russian Railways considers the project important from a geopolitical point of view, but it would be hard to implement it without the state’s support. A source of RIA Novosti news agency in Russian Railways added that the company did not change its position, simply some media outlets draw wrong conclusions.
Beglaryan also said that a visit to China is scheduled for late September, with the Armenia-Iran railway construction issue also being on the agenda. “We received proposals from many Chinese companies. Yet at the moment the Armenian side gives preference to two proposals. Details will be given in the near future,” the minister said.
